Mad Quilter’s
Summer Crawler's
Pop Over Top
Size 6 to 18 months (adjustable by moving the button placement)
Requirements
4 buttons or snaps
2 fat quarters for contrast.
Trims of your choice
Sewing machine, scissors, thread and other genera; sewing items
Preparing the pattern:
Download the FREE PDF (33mb with photo tutorial) or just the Pattern Pieces ( 339kb) and print off a copy of the front and back pattern pieces.
Skirt is cut from dimensions.
I host my PDF's at MediaFire this is a free fileshare and sometimes there can be difficulties downloading the file. If this is the case, you can leave me a comment with an email address and I will email the file to you. Please remember I am giving this pattern to you for free so be polite. Gosh I shouldn't have to say that but I do sometimes get a not so nicely worded request.
Cutting:
Cut 2 of the front pieces and 2 of the back pieces, on fold of fabric.
Cut 2 skirt pieces.
Measurements depend on how long you want the skirt.
The skirt I made with the crochet trim was 38cms wide by 16cms deep.
If not adding trim cut skirt 38cms by 20cms.
You can vary the length to suit your needs.
I recommend you don’t make it too long as it may get in babies way when crawling.
You can make the skirt wider if you want it fuller.
Construction:
The Yoke:
With the two front pieces together sew around the upper edge.
Leave the bottom edge open.
Repeat for the back pieces.
Trim and clip the seam. I like to use my pinking shears for this.
Seam allowance is 1cm
Turn the front and back yokes to the right side facing out. Roll out the edges with your fingers and press.
Prepare the Skirt.
Overlock (serge) the two shorter sides and one of the longer sides of the each of the skirt pieces.
Fold over 1cm on the sides and sew the side hems.
Fold over 1cm on the long side you serged and sew the bottom hem.
It’s easier to add any embellishment to the skirt before you join it to the yoke.
I added three rows of Ric-Rac to this skirt.
Joining the skirt to the yoke.
There are two ways you can do this, with pleats or by gathering the skirt.
I pleated mine as I didn’t want to fuss with gathering.
Pin mark the center and quarter of both the skirt and yoke.
Place the yoke and skirt right sides together.
Match the pins and pin the yoke to the skirt.
Make pleats evenly between the pins. Fold the extra fabric between the pins.
I folded my little pleats toward the center of the skirt.
Pin into place and sew the skirt to one layer of the yoke being careful to keep the other side of the yoke out of the way.
Tuck the seam allowance of the yoke lining under.
Pin and hand stitch. Enclosing the raw edge for a neat finish.
Repeat the above steps for the Back yoke and skirt.
Add two buttonholes to the front yoke or apply snaps.
Add the buttons to the back yoke.
You can adjust the placement of the buttons for a better fit, if you find the top slips off the shoulders.
Sew buttons to the side of the back skirt and sew button loops to the side of the front skirt. Place them about 2 cms below the yoke.
I used crochet cotton to sew the button loops to the side of the front skirt.
Button loops are sewn, by sewing a loop large enough to put the button through.
Then working buttonhole stitches into the loop. If you aren’t sure how to do this there is a tutorial here: http://autoscopia.com/amelia/archives/2005/12/buttonloops.html
Now button the popover at the shoulders and sides and it’s finished.
Make a coordinating pair of Mad Quilter Bloomers and you’ve got the sweetest little set for summer.
There are many ways to embellish this little popover. So let your imagination run free and use up all those little bits of ric rac, fabric and trim.

GRACIAS!!!!
Thank you for the lovely pattern. A bit of advice for whoever is having trouble downloading the pattern-- 1st) look at the yellow bar under the address bar and allow the site to temporarily use pop-ups 2nd) the tutorial with pictures is image heavy and can take a long time to download, so instead just mark this page in your favorites and download just the pattern pieces 3rd) when the download asks to open or to save--choose save; fewer glitches that way
And Tracy, if the host you use continues to give your readers rpoblems, you may consider using box.net, another file sharing site that is free.
Thanks again for the pattern!! :)
