Cool to wear with a nappy for a summer baby.
With no exposed seams to irritate

Less than 3 weeks until my baby is due!
I originally designed this in two pattern pieces front and back.
After making up the first trial garment, I decided to eliminate the side seams.
The lined version is reversible.
The trial garment I bound, it was fiddly.
In this version I have lined the vest.
You can choose to bind if you prefer, you will need to remove the seam allowance.

Printing the Pattern
Print the pattern being careful not to scale.
Cut out and join Part A and Part b on the dotted lines.

Fabric
0.5m of Light to medium woven fabrics. I used quilters cotton.
You can use fat quarters but you will need to cut with a center seam at the back to get the pattern to fit.

Cutting

Cut one of lining and one of fabric on a fold.
As illustrated above.

Construction

Place right sides together. Pinning well.

Sew around the front and hem edges with a 6mm seam allowance.
Sew along the neckline.
Sew the underarms, leaving openings as indicated on pattern and as illustrated in the photo below.

Clip the curves, all the way around including the neckline and the underarms.

Turn the vest through one of the shoulder openings.

Pin the right sides together of the shoulders through the opening. Be careful to match the seams. Sew with a 6mm seam allowance. You may find you can only pin one side at a time as the opening is a little snug.

Fold the seam allowances of the opening in and pin them together.

Close the opening with a tiny ladder stitch.

Once you have sewn each shoulder together. Roll the edges between your fingers and give the vest a good press with the iron.

You can choose to topstitch all the way around to reinforce the seams and make washing and ironing easier or leave the vest as is.

Add snaps as a closure and the vest is reversible.
You can choose to use buttons and button holes and it won't be reversible.

The bound version will require facings at the front opening to reinforce the snaps.
Although it has only one layer of fabric, it is a lot more fiddly and time consuming to sew!
If you decide to bind you will need to remove the seam allowances from the arm holes, hem, neck and front.

Yet another gorgeous creation Tracy :) I'm printing this one out as well to make up for some newborn gifts.

Thank-you!

My daughter bought a christening outfit for her baby but, besides being expensive, it didn't fit that well. So she asked me if I could make one. I am an amateur seamstress at best, but with your pattern, I was able to make the cutest little vest! Thank you so much for sharing your creativity and know-how!
