Stitch Markers Tutorial

Stitch Markers are so easy, cheap and fun to make.
You probably really don't need a tutorial to work it out!
But here goes anyway.

Run off to the nearest $2 shop and get yourself a cheap set of pliers.
This set cost me $10 from Cheap as Chips here in SA
Or maybe you already have a set?

You really only need one with a side cutter on it.
But the set was cheap and handy.

 Also from Cheap as Chips.
A packet of bead $3.
Some tiger tail, it's a thin type of wire. $2 for 6m
And some crimps, they came in the same sort of bag as the tiger tail about 100 for $2.
So $7 of materials will make you a LOT of markers!
Cheap Huh?

Cut your tiger tail around 3 inches in length.
Needs to be big enough to hold your selection of beads
and have enough of a loop for your needle to go through.

Fold the tiger tail in half.
I threaded a little seed bead on both ends.
i find putting a little bead on first stops the big bead riding up.

Next put on your bigger bead.
Thread it onto both ends.

Next slip one of the crimps onto the end.
make sure it is around both ends of the tiger tail.

Then using the nose of your pliers squash the crimp
so that it seals the tiger tail.

Cut off the sticky out ends to neaten.
This stops the ends catching on your knitting.

 And there you're done!
Simple!!

Now off you go and make lots of them.
I've seen lots of these sold in sets of four for around $10!
So if you wanted you could whip a few up for the next craft market.

You don't want stitch markers too big, they get in your way when you knit.
You could get some of those beads with letters on them and make words.
You could use letters like K, P, YON and give them a knitting theme.
Spell out your name so you know they are yours.
Use letters to mark back, front, side seams.
And I'm sure you can come up with lots more creative ideas.

So off you go..off to the dollar store and get busy.
Lovely gift for a friend who knits.
I'll be back later with a tutorial for a little stitch marker keeper!

They are cute looking. When I need markers, i use odd bits of yarn - works, but these look way nicer & so easy to make. Thanks for the instructions.
