I love my vintage magazines.

I was down the shed flicking through my magazines looking for inspiration.

And came across this.

Simple, quick, fun and a scrap buster too.

Just a few scraps of Gingham and quilters cotton.

Half an hour of sewing at most.

And pretty little ducks to entertain Heather.

I want to make the doves and doll.

Not keen on the bear or the kitty they look a little strange.

I will get Fern and Rose to help.

I'm sure they will enjoy making toys and they are a very easy project.

Big sisters are very handy.

It was lucky I made two ducks as Michael has run off with one!

That's Olivia by Farbenmix.

Crafty Mama's is the Australian stockist for Farbenmix and that's where I bought my copy.

It took about 2 hours to make this.

I used a lightweight stretch for the sleeves, hood and pocket.

The dress is made of velour. 

I bought the velour from Crafty Mama's store and the cherry print came from the op-shop.

 

I made the largest size which was 8/10 and it was big enough to fit Fern.

I got humbugged into making this dress by Fern.

She was upset that I make stuff for the little kids all the time and she misses out!

She was pretty impressed.

I loved the pattern very quick and easy to sew up.

There is an over dress for with this pattern but I'm not making it this time.

Rose and Lilly are now 'humbugging' for a new dress too.

Kwik Sew Sewing for Toddler and Martha Pullen Applique

Kwik Sew's Sewing for Toddlers is one of those must have classic books.

I used the raglan jacket pattern from Kwik Sew.

 I used the dinosaur applique from Martha's Favorites Applique book.

I had an off cut of sweatshirt Jersey which I had bought at the op-shop and some rainbow polar fleece.

And this is what I came up with.

I used different coloured snaps for the fastenings.

The dino on the back has button eyes.

I bound the sleeves and neckline with polar fleece.

I threaded some elastic through the neckline as I didn't stay stitch and it stretched out when I sewed the binding on! And as I didn't use a ribbed collar the neckline wasn't pulled in and was too large anyway.

Michael was pretty impressed!

Tiny Wallet Tutorial

When I go shopping I use my card mostly.

No matter how big my purse I can fill it! 

In an effort to minimise what I carry around with me, I designed this little wallet.

This wallet requires small amounts of fabric to make.

Make a few to co-ordinate with your different handbags.

Material required:

Small amount of deco weight fabric for the outer wallet, or you can interface quilters cotton.

quilters cotton for lining.

1/2 an inch of velcro

matching or coordinating thread.

 

Cutting:

Wallet outer and lining cut rectangles 4.5 inches by 6.5 inches

Pockets 4.5 inches by 10 inches.

Mark the pocket folds by pressing folds at 3 inches, 5 3/4 inches, 7 3/4.

You are creating one pocket by folding.

Fold the pockets up as illustrated in the photo above.

Mark where the velcro will go. It's places 3/4 inches above the raw edge and centered.

Sew the  loop side of velcro on through the two layers of fabric only! 

Topstitch the top folds of the pocket. this keeps it nice and tidy.

 

Place the pocket at one end of the lining.

Baste around the pocket as shown above. 

This makes it easier to not miss any of the layers when you sew up the lining to the outer.

Sew the hook part of the velcro to the lining.

Positioning it 3/4 inches from the top and centered.

The lining and pockets are now complete.

Place the right sides of the wallet outer and the lining together.

Sew around the edge leaving a 2 inch opening on the top flap of the wallet.

Clip and trim the corners.

Turn the wallet to the right side through the gap left.

Give the wallet a good press open. And fold it and press the fold line.

Top stitch around, catching the opening closed as you go.

Stitch along the center fold too.

All done!

The kids all have one for the money they take to school.
