How To Make A Girl's Skirt Without A Pattern.

Step1 :Start by measuring. You need a waist, hip and skirt length measurement.

Step 2 : Cutting out. You need to cut the skirt the length + 3inches and the width needs to be at least twice your childs waist. In this case Fern's waist is 21 inches. For Fern I can cut a 21 inch x 44 inch strip. (width of fabric). With a larger child you would need to cut two pieces of fabric, a back and front to get the width required for the skirt gathers. This skirt is pulled on over the hips. The waist band needs to be 3.5 inches by the measurement of the hip plus 2 inches to allow for seams and a little give.

Step 3 Sew the side seams Or back seam. to form a tube of fabric.

Step 4 fold the waistband in half lengthway and press. Sew the ends together.

Step 5 Mark the tube and waistband into quarters with pins

Step 6 Gather the fabric. You can do this by sewing two lines of stitching using a long straight stitch or by zigzagging over a cord or crochet cotton.

Step 7 Matching marks on skirt and band pin them together and draw gathering stitching to fit. Even out gathers and pin.

Step 8 Sew wasitband and skirt together. Trim the seam to tidy it.

Step 9 Fold wasitband over and pin. Sew it down by hand (looks better) or machine. Leaving a 1.5inch opening to insert the elastic.

Step 10 measure the elastic to fit your childs waist. Cut an inch larger to allow for overlap. Insert Elastic being careful not to twist it. I use a safety pin to do this. Overlap the ends of the elastic, sew together being careful to secure firmly. I sew both overlaps with a zigzag stitch.

Step 11 Stitch the opening for the elastic closed.

Step 12 Try the skirt on and pin the hem up.

Step 13 Iron the hem up. Folding under the raw edge.
Step 14 Pin the hem well and stitch it down by hand or machine.

And you're Finished - Time to model!
